Position Summary:

The Physical Therapy Technician assists in the care and treatment of patients under the direct supervision of the Occupational and Physical therapists, administers and monitors programs for infection control; performs tasks to maintain the department in a safe and orderly condition.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities Include the following:

  • Assists the occupational and physical therapists in administering treatments, under their direct supervision.
  • Obtains equipment, material, supplies, and positions them appropriately for use.
  • Assists patients in ambulation when instructed by a therapist.
  • Assists therapists to support, transfer, ambulate, and treat patients.
  • Provides coverage at the front desk in the absence of the clerk.
  • Observes patients and their equipment and reports unusual symptoms or equipment failure the therapists.
  • Administers and monitors current methods of the infection control throughout the department.
  • Maintains and clean all equipment and materials used in patient treatment.
  • Prepares equipment, such as hot/cold packs, and ultrasound/electric stimulation.
  • Maintains current inventory of materials and supplies to determine need for requisitions.
  • Maintains and organize storage and supply area in an orderly way.
  • Assists in the orientation, training of volunteers and students.
  • Attends department meetings and in-services when relevant and appropriate subjects are presented.
  • Attends hospitals mandatory in-service programs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Successful completion of orientation and on-the-job training according to department guidelines.
  • Ability to interact with and assist therapists in the treatment of adults, and seniors.
  • Experience working with infants, children, adolescents if needed.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written).

  • Ability to communicate ideas, observations, and suggestions.
  • Ability to learn basic computer tasks.
  • Ability to follow through and complete tasks independently.

  • Enthusiasm for working with people and interest in learning and developing skills in a wide variety of areas.
  • Interest in care giving.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to change in work areas and schedules.
  • Ability to relate cooperatively and constructively with patients’ families, significant others, co-workers, physicians, and other staff members.
  • Manual dexterity, body coordination and strength to assist in positioning of patients and equipment.
  • Ability to frequently push/pull, lift heavy objects.
  • Ability to walk and stand for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to use tools such as screwdrivers, wrenches, hole punches.
  • May be exposed to blood, body fluids or tissues requiring the use of techniques of barrier precautions (Universal Precaution Techniques) as outlined in the Body Substance Isolation Policy and the standard for exposure to blood borne pathogens
  • Exposure to chemicals necessary to perform job of PT Technician. Any chemicals, substances the employee may be exposed to as noted in the MSDS Manual
